Pumpkin, Pumpkin, Who’s Got the Pumpkin?

Both pumpkinsAs mentioned in an earlier blog, Mer and I have carved pumpkins for eleven years now. Here are the 2006 editions.

Mer came up with a very nice Shakespeare, while I carved the second in my Christian pumpkin series.

You realize that most normal people (i.e. me and Jo) carve scary pumpkins? I’ll admit, most of Mere’s students would probably scream at her pumpkin…

Mer, that’s the best Shakespearian pumpkin I’ve ever seen.

Likewise, Mu, that’s gotta be the best Christian pumpkin I’ve ever seen. But Mu, don’t you think there are a few tensions between Halloween and Christian Reformed denominations (and pseudo-denominations)? Halloween is, after all, the Eve of All Saints Day, one of the Catholic celebrations that got disposed of as superstition. And the cultural celebration of Halloween is filled with ghosts and goblins. I’m not sure how Halloween got to be such a major holiday in the States, but it does seem incongruous with most non-pagan belief systems.

i am always amused by Christian themes at halloween, but i guess it’s sort of like being a Christian in Hollywood–someone’s gotta try. haha.

    love the pumpkins.

sleepy and hungry. off to do something about the second and hopefully not to fall into the first. especially while doing the second.

btw–YOU OWE ME A PHONE CALL.
